Why am I being asked to reauthenticate an existing linked account?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

There are multiple reasons why your bank may require you to reauthenticate your connection through Plaid. We have listed some common reasons below:

1. Your bank requires you to re-authenticate

For security reasons, many banks periodically require you to log in again and re-confirm access. This can happen even if nothing changed on your end.

2. Your bank updated its security settings

Banks sometimes change their login process (e.g., new multi-factor authentication, updated security questions, new terms of service). When this happens, Plaid needs you to log in again.

3. Your password or username changed

If you recently updated your bank credentials, Plaid can no longer access the account with the old login.

4. Your bank session expired

Some banks limit how long third-party connections (like Plaid) stay active before requiring re-verification.

5. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) was triggered

Your bank may require a one-time code (via text, email, or app) to confirm access.

6. The bank temporarily blocked third-party access

Occasionally banks flag external connections for review or temporarily block them.

7. Too many failed login attempts

If there were multiple failed attempts (even automatic ones), the bank may require manual re-authentication.
